Sunscreens help protect our skin against skin cancer, learn everything in this article about mineral based sunblocks and chemical based sunblocks. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) out of 1500 sun protection products, only 405 products were up to the expectations which mean 73% of products advertised as protection and safety against sunrays were failed to meet the EWG standards.
The report says 73% of products contained concerning ingredients including chemicals tied to hormone disruption and skin irritation. Let’s make a comparison of both mineral-based and chemical-based sun protection products.
Minerals Based Products
What it means – These sunscreens are powered by the minerals zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and are also referred to as “physical.”
How it works – The white minerals reflect UV rays, so they don’t penetrate the skin (unlike chemical blockers, which absorb UV rays).
The goods – Minerals begin protecting right away. And since UV rays are deflected, these are best for people with heat-activated issues, like melasma or rosacea, according to Rouleau. They are even proven to prevent melasma relapses.
The bads – Some brands utilize nano-size minerals to avoid the chalky effect. But those tiny minerals can easily be absorbed by—and harm—marine life, says Dr. Bowe. Look for non-nano if you’ll be open-water swimming, surfing, or paddleboarding.

Chemicals Based Products
What it means – Carbon-based compounds, like avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, and more are used to protect your skin.
How it works – These ingredients convert rays into heat (you won’t feel it, promise) and deactivate them, explains Renée Rouleau, celebrity aesthetician.
The goods – Chemical formulas are often lightweight and clear, so they work on all skin tones (minerals can leave a white veil). And because they fully sink in, you won’t have any streaks running down your body if you’re a heavy sweater.
The bads – The chemicals take about 15 minutes to activate, so wait for a beat before you head out. Also, ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate have been linked to serious coral harm. For the eco-conscious, save this type of SPF for use on dry land.
